ABOUT US

Who or what is the OakSong Society?

The OakSong Society for Preservation of Way Cool Music is a non-profit music education organization. We are an umbrella group associated with the Shasta County Arts Council. Our address is Post Office Box 904, Oak Run, California 96069. We are members of the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce. We started the organization to bring high quality, affordable music to the foothills and mountains of Shasta county. We look for artists passing close to our area who are willing to make the trip to our beautiful, but remote concert location, Gray Pine Farm in Oak Run, owned by Bruce & Linda Wendt. Our indoor concerts are usually held at Bernie's Guitar in Redding.
The President of the Board of Directors is Barry Hazle.
Venue Director is Bruce Wendt
Volunteer Director is Lynn Schroeder
Indoor/Winter Artistic Director is Pete Angwin

What is Way Cool Music?

Our definition of 'Way Cool' is fairly open.  The major music gurus made up a new category to catch the various musical forms that didn't fall into the existing niches of Pop, Country, Rock & Roll, Soul, Rock, etc. They call it Americana Music.  It includes folk, bluegrass, blues, zydeco, alternative country, "true" country, old time music and other forms of folk music, even some forms of Jazz.  It's music created by wonderfully talented artists who just don't get a lot of radio air play because they can't be contained by the formula music of Nashville, L.A., New York or Detroit.  Ninety-nine percent of the radio most people listen to is formula - it is pre-programmed by 'experts' so that you listen to the music they want you to hear.

We also believe that people should have the opportunity to hear music in person. There is nothing better, in our minds, than a live concert in a small, comfortable setting. A concert where the artist is actually talking to you, and where they want to sign autographs. It's like having music on your front porch - "way cool."

Can I become a member of the Society?

You are when you purchase a ticket and come to one of our concerts. We just don't keep membership lists or charge dues. We do keep an email list to let folks know about concerts or other special events. If you like, email us at
i n f o (at) o a k s o n g s. c o m
and ask to be put on the email list.

What about kids?

Kids are cool, they are the future, and we want to provide an easy and inexpensive way for them to learn to appreciate traditional sounds and create their own sound in the future. And the only way they can do either is to be exposed to roots- related music. But keep them under control, and out of the plants and the little creek.

At outdoor concerts they are welcome  - for free -  if they are 16 years old or under and accompanied by a paying adult.

At indoor events the seating is too limited to allow kids to come in for free. The exception is when they will sit on your lap.

Gray Pine Farm & Way Out West BBQ are owned by Bruce & Linda Wendt. The facility is available for weddings, business and private picnics and BBQs.  Call 530-472-3303 for more information.

Outdoor Concerts at Gray Pine Farm:
~We offer fine BBQ dinners at our outdoor concerts. The menus vary from concert to concert, and we will publish them on our website.
~It is a rare occasion that we sell alcoholic beverages, but we do allow you to bring your own refreshments.
~Remember the Golden Rule, be good to your neighbors and have a designated driver.
~You are welcome to bring your own picnic-style dinner and refreshments to our outdoor concerts.
~Remember this is the California foothills - NO FIRES and No Cooking.
~You may smoke in designated areas only -  Not in the audience or dining areas.

Chairs & Seating Policy & What to Bring:
~Bring a lawn chair to outdoor concerts.
~We do not provide chairs for our outdoor concerts. We also do not require that you bring low style lawn chairs. If you're like me I hate those useless assemblages of metal or wood. Regular height lawn chairs are the standard.

~If you bring a low chair it does not give you the right to sit in front.
~Seating is first come, first served. And remember you're not the only person in the audience - use as little space in the seating area as possible.
~We make exceptions for handicapped folks, but please call ahead so we may plan the seating.
~Don't forget a light jacket, bug juice and a flashlight - it's dark in them thar hills!
